BilateralDepth™ Integration | Framework by Dr. Catherine Smith, LCSW
Go deeper than thinking your way through it.
Sometimes you know something needs to change, but you don’t yet know what that change should look like. You may be facing a decision, developing an idea or project, considering a new direction, shaping a goal, or curious about possibilities you haven’t yet explored.
BilateralDepth™ Integration Sessions offer a different way in.
Blending Jungian depth psychology with bilateral stimulation, coaching sessions engage imagination, symbolism, imagery, creative exploration, and somatic awareness to invite deeper associations and unexpected connections—allowing patterns to emerge, perspectives to shift, and new possibilities to come into view.

What is BilateralDepth™ Integration?
Some things can only be taken so far through thinking alone. BilateralDepth™ offers a way to move beyond what you already know about a situation and explore what may be less obvious, difficult to articulate, or not yet fully formed.
What makes BilateralDepth™ different is that we don’t only talk about what you bring to the session. We work with it experientially. Rather than searching for the right answer, we follow what emerges—sensations, memories, images, associations, contradictions, and unexpected ideas—and explore where they lead. This creates another way of approaching the choices in front of you.
The Open–Follow Method
FOCUS · OPEN · FOLLOW · INTEGRATE
1. FOCUS
We begin with what you want to explore. Together, we clarify the question, idea, decision, or possibility that brings you to the session, while leaving enough room for the focus to evolve as the work unfolds.
2. OPEN
Rather than continuing to think through a situation in familiar ways, we use bilateral stimulation and experiential practices to broaden your attention. Sensations, memories, images, metaphors, associations, and unexpected thoughts become part of the exploration—bringing more than conscious reasoning into the process.
3. FOLLOW
We follow what captures your attention without deciding too quickly what it means or where it should lead. An unexpected association may change how you see a situation, a contradiction may reveal something you had overlooked, or an unfinished idea may begin to take shape. Creativity here is not about artistic ability—it is about accessing a wider range of ways to think, imagine, and respond.
4. INTEGRATE
We return to what brought you to the session and make sense of what emerged, identifying what has shifted, which connections matter, and what new possibilities have come into view. From there, the exploration becomes tangible—a clearer decision, a new direction, a more developed idea or goal, an alternative approach, or a concrete next step.
